WE LOVE VINTAGE!

That's the understatement of the century, right?

When we aren't busy in the sewing room, there's a good chance we're out perusing local antique malls and estate sales.

One of our estate sale "must buys" are old sewing notions. Even though we already have tons of notions at home, whenever we come across an old sewing box, jar of buttons, or stash of vintage patterns--we just can't leave it behind.

So what do we do with all these notions? We tend to keep a lot for home decor, personal projects, or just to preserve these rare gems. But when our limit is reached and it's time to destash, you'll often find these beauties in our 2nd shop. One of our favorite things to make is sewing themed junk journal kits. We love tucking in old notion wrappers, pattern tissue, buttons, lace, and whatnot into the packs. Here's some of our kits:

Aren't those fun? We also make quite a few vintage lace & trim bundles for journaling, card making, and crafts.

And lastly, we also bundle vintage patterns by era and sell them as lots!

On the blog today, we have our last project with National Parks by Anderson Design Group for Riley Blake Designs. We can't tell you how much fun we've had with this line!

Doesn't this collection make you want to pack up and go out on an adventure? We especially love the nostalgic feel and vintage inspired poster art. We decided it was the perfect line to release our new pattern: Aunt Henri's Saddle Bag. Inspired by a favorite purse of ours from the 70's, this saddle bag is simple to sew and super easy to customize.

When it comes to bag making, pairing quilting cotton with colored vinyl is an Aunt Henri staple. Vinyl makes the bag more durable and balances out the multiple prints we use. Plus--it just looks sharp, doesn't it?

We used three prints in this bag: mini posters, signs and patches.

If you've never done an inset zipper pocket, here's your chance to learn how!

For the lining, we used Riley Blake Shades in the color Sand.

Here's a different look with a vinyl flap instead of a print and with a metal lock clasp.

You can find Aunt Henri's Saddle Bag Pattern in our shop HERE.

Doesn't this make a perfect traveling trio?

It seems we've had an explosion of color at Aunt Henri lately. As beautiful as it's been, we've found a much needed oasis of serenity in this tranquil collection from the ever lovely Gerri Robinson of Planted Seed Designs™.

Aptly titled Serenity, this fabric from Riley Blake Designs is a fantastic addition to any home with a modern neutral color scheme.

We chose to work with a 10" Stacker this time and made a set of Dresden Plate chargers for an elegant place setting.

We wanted a softer curve to the edge of our plate so we drafted our own template which you can download here:

The template will make a 15" Dresden which is the perfect size to act as a charger beneath your best china.

A 10" Stacker will make 14 blocks, which makes for great gift potential. Here's the layout we used:

Since these weren't going to be everyday place mats we opted to line them with linen and skip the batting and quilting.

Our centers were secured with an ivory thread but then embellished with a couple rows of black decorative stitching.

Doesn't it look a bit like a doily?

As for our napkins, Gerri has a gorgeous fabric Cream Serenity Border Print that has a vintage lace design! It reminds us of bridal lace or table cloth lace and we can think of so many uses for it, starting with a table cloth border!

It made such an elegant napkin we didn't even bother with the napkin folding book this time.

We sure hope Serenity inspires you to make something--especially since those holidays are right around the corner!

Happy Sewing.
