The Spooky Star
Boo! Halloween is only three months away! We've got just the party theme for you: J Wecker Frisch's Costume Maker's Ball from Riley Blake Designs. And weren't we clever to have our very own orange dog Riley to match the decor?
We knew before Janet even finished this collection that we wanted to make a table cloth out of those bunting triangles. As soon as we saw them we thought they'd make great faux prairie points! Not exactly something you could attach to a regular quilt but definitely something fun for a Halloween party--and we love Halloween parties.
The cloth itself is made of 12" foundation pieced Spooky Star blocks. We chose to use just four of the prints and a black background. What gives it a bit more visual interest is the fact that we mirror imaged half of the blocks.

The points were made by fusing sheer weight interfacing to the back of the panel and then sewing it to a black lining piece. We sewed the points before cutting them out. We turned them right side out and gave them a good press. After our quilt top came back from the quilters with it's adorable spider web design, we simply sandwiched the triangles between the quilt top and the binding, with right sides facing.
After stitching we folded the binding to the backside as you would normally do. We machine stitched the binding in place since the triangles would nicely cover the stitching.
Here's a close up of the spiderweb quilting by the lovely Carole along with fibers picked up in the sewing room--oh the joys of working with black fabric!
Janet sent us some Costume Maker's Ball fat quarters a while back so we made a napkin holder and no-more-single-use-plastic bowl cover. Both projects are great for fat quarters and we'll have complete how-to's next week on those.
